Shuter Sunset Farms - Indiana Tuff Enuff Bull

Shuter Sunset Farms has been raising Registered Red Poll Cattle since 1941 when Mervin and his father Leslie purchased a Red Poll  heifer for Mervin to show in 4-H.  At times over the years, we were up to as many as 100 cows.  With Mike going to Purdue in 1969, we held a couple of production sales to reduce the workload, resulting in a cowherd that has remained around 30 cows since then.

Many of our cows have the Shuter’s prefix back for generations and generations.  Recently, we have been using bulls out of the Carl’s Swine Enterprises herd from Huntington, Jackson Farms herd from Greensfork and the Weise Farms herd in Haven, KS.

We have tried to maintain a moderate framed, easy keeping cowherd that results in cattle that perform in the feedlot as well as in the show ring.  We feed out all of our steers and purchase a few calves from a neighbor to finish filling the feedlot.  These steers and heifers form the basis for our Indiana Farm Fresh Beef, freezer beef program.  We target spring calving with the herd to allow for the best utilization of our lush grass that grows in April and May.  Our calves are weaned in the fall, all but the top end of the bulls are castrated and the steers and heifers are placed directly into the feedlot.

Like Father, Like Son

Our roots run deep in the Red Poll show ring as Shuter cattle have been finding their way into the purple for many years.  Mervin and Mike have exhibited cattle all across the country with Champions at the International in Chicago, at the North American at Louisville, as well as numerous State and County fairs.  Now, we primarily exhibit cattle at the Indiana and Kentucky State Fairs and at the North American at Louisville.  We have had the fortune of raising and exhibiting three National or Reserve National Champion Bulls in the last 5 years.  Shuter’s Tuff Enuff was undefeated during the summer of 2002, being named Grand Champion at the Indiana and Kentucky State Fairs and then National Champion at the North American at Louisville. Tuff also appears to be able to pass on his ability to find the purple as his first son, Kalijah was named the Reserve National Champion at the 2005 North American and his second son, Shuter’s Thunderstruck, was named the Reserve National Champion in 2006.

2006 Reserve National Champion
Shuter's Thunderstruck
Our Senior Herdsire

Thunder will assume the herdsire duties here at Shuter Sunset Farms due to the untimely death of Tuff Enuff during the fall of 2006.  Thunder is an April son of Tuff, out of our now deceased Weise bred, WFB Starlett cow who was a division winner herself at the 2002 National Show.  Thunder combines the best of both of his parents, with the eye appeal, structural correctness and power of Tuff and the performance and EPD’s of his Dam.  We are extremely excited about the opportunities that Thunderstruck will provide for the future of our cowherd.  We have also been purchasing a few top females over the last few years to gain access to outcross genetics to mate to Tuff and now Thunder.  We can’t wait to show you the results.
